Spain is a popular option for Britons looking for a second home in the sun.

However, moving to the country could become more difficult as new limits have been proposed.

The Canary Island Government has shared plans to ban the building of new holiday homes.

This would be effective in certain municipalities across the island.

New laws could ban new holiday homes

This comes as the latest blow for tourists as it will focus on enforcing the ban in popular tourist spots.

Some areas that already have up to a third of housing that is just for tourist purposes could be affected.

Proposals claimed it would combat “gentrification” and “touristification”.

The Canary Islands is a popular spot for Britons looking for some sun.

It has a population of just over two million, but attracted a whopping 12.6 million foreign tourists in 2022, data showed.

Some five million of those tourists came from the UK and many of these will choose to purchase a holiday home in the area.

Proposals drafted in the Canary Islands suggest quotas on how many holiday homes can be built in some areas.

There are proposals for “zero growth” areas to be enforced.
