Commuters heading to and from London Paddington face “major disruption” this evening because of damage to overhead electric cables.

Trains running to and from the station may be cancelled or delayed by up to 80 minutes, National Rail said.

The disruption also affects the Elizabeth line, with services to stations between Paddington and Heathrow and Reading cancelled.

Major disruption is expected, National Rail said, until the end of the day.

One stranded passenger told Sky News: “I’ve been sat for an hour outside Paddington and [it was] just announced another train has crashed into a power line.

“There’ll be thousands of people heading for Heathrow missing flights.”

A video posted by 999London on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed a dark carriage, with a travel announcement just audible over the chatter of passengers.

As the announcement continues, a woman’s voice repeats “that’s crazy”, and, with a baby crying nearby, she adds “I never have this. I have a baby, I have a flight to catch on, but we can do nothing.”

Another woman said “Oh, my days, I never, ever had this,.. I have to call my husband now.”

The post said “Hundreds of freezing passengers have been trapped for over two hours on Elizabeth Line trains in the #Paddington area of west London after a power failure.

“Some passengers are forcing doors open to exit the trains using their phones as torches.”

@jessevershed said on X that she had spent “nearly THREE hours” just outside Paddington… Nobody is finding this funny now… and poor driver doesn’t have a clue.”

In a statement on its website, National Rail said the problems are down to “damage to the overhead electric wires between London Paddington and Acton Main Line”, meaning “all lines are blocked”.

Trains running to or from London Paddington, the statement warned, “may be cancelled, delayed by up to 80 minutes or revised.”

In addition, the statement advised, trains won’t be stopping at stations between Paddington and Heathrow or Reading and services towards Shenfield will all start at London Liverpool Street.

Chiltern Railways and South Western Railway are accepting tickets on parts of their networks.

Customers can also use their tickets on London Underground “via any reasonable route” and parts of the London Buses network.

Thameslink, Southeastern and the Docklands Light Railway will also accept the tickets on some journeys.
