Fallon Sherrock has explained her relief at being able to silence those who criticised the decision to give her a wildcard for the 2022 World Darts Championship by earning her spot this year.

Sherrock became an overnight sensation in 2019 when she made history by making it through to the third round of the World Championships.

That was followed up with a quarter-final run at the Grand Slam of Darts in 2021 when she recorded impressive wins over Mike De Decker, Gabriel Clemens and Mensur Suljovic.

But she’s been unable to repeat her World Championships heroics since then and was trolled last year after being given a backdated wildcard spot into the main draw.

No such wildcard is needed for this year’s Championships though as she joined Mikuru Suzuki in earning the two qualifying spots from the Women’s Series.

“That feels a lot better,” she said.

“No one can say anything because I’ve obviously earned my space this year.

“I did last year, but I get it. No one can actually say anything this year.

“I’m like ‘yes, there’s less stress on me this year’.”

She added: “This time I’m going to go in with the same mentality all my other games.

“I feel like I’m a bit stronger under the pressure situations coming into my finishing.

“So if I can just tweak my scoring a little bit more, I feel a bit more confident closing out games this time.”

Sherrock tested herself against both Rob Cross and Michael van Gerwen in last month’s Grand Slam of Darts and created opportunities to cause a massive upset.

Both matches ended in defeat, but Sherrock feels the experience has only increased her chances of going on a run at the World Championships.

She added: “I’ve always said that I want to play the best players because it shows me where my level of game is at.

“I don’t want to play somebody who is just handing me the game.

“I want to be pushed, I want to see how much resilience I have, how much pressure situations I can deal with.

“The fact that Michael and Rob threw everything at me, it’s making me stronger going into the worlds. That’s what I wanted. I wanted to be really pushed.”
